DETOURS September 2021:   St Johns Concours 2021

St. John's Concours d'Elegance 2021

The original Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance began in the mid 80's and was held on the Dodge Estate Meadow Brook Hall grounds (now Oakland University) in Rochester Michigan. The show had, from the start, a great tradition of featuring automotive fine art in an invitational exhibition and a much celebrated art auction the night of the formal dinner. The event moved to Plymouth Michigan and was renamed the St. John Concours d'Elegance in 2011 where it has remained to the current year.

Larry Moss, chairman for the current concours was the event chairman for the 1999 Meadow Brook Show well remembered for the tornado that passed through the fully prepared show field the night before the event. This was his first year in the role and he... along with the rest of the team... pulled off a much "adjusted" but much appreciated event the day of the show.

Things have come full circle. The 2021 St John's event was blasted by wind, rain and thunder rendering the golf course flooded and unusable for the show. Again, Larry and the dedicated crew pulled off another miracle and moved the entire event to the VIP parking lot for show day. "Despite the challenges supplied by mother nature, thousands of enthusiasts spent the day enjoying 300 of the rarest and finest automobiles ever produced, in what many called a very intimate setting." says Moss, "The Concours of America's final show at the Inn at St John was a success despite overnight rain forcing even organizers to move the show to parking areas surrounding the Inn." With the acquisition of the Concours by Hagerty, this may well be his last time at the helm. The show will move to the Detroit Institute of Art for 2022 in September. It will be interesting to see the show layout at the DIA... one idea is that they will line up the show cars on Woodward Avenue.
